Applying for payments in lieu of taxes

As a representative of a Canadian taxing authorityFootnote 1, you can apply for payments in lieu of taxes (PILT)Footnote 2 on the following types of federal property in your jurisdictions:

  • real property that is both owned by the Government of Canada and is administered by a federal department or agency (such as Public Services and Procurement Canada, National Defence, Transport Canada and Parks Canada, among others)
  • diplomatic or consular real property in Canada owned by foreign governments

To apply for PILT, you have two options. You can either sign in to apply online (password-protected) or print application forms and submit them by email or mail. Please ensure to submit all relevant documents (such as by-laws and spreadsheets of property data) with your application.

Once your application is received, Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) will verify it, confirm eligibility of the federal property, perform valuation reviews, confirm tax classes and applicable tax rates, and issue payments (if applicable). If you are not already receiving your payments from PSPC by direct deposit, you should register for direct deposit of your payments in lieu of taxes.

Note

To apply for PILT on corporation property (such as Canada Post Corporation, the CBC, Via Rail Corporation) or on property administered by other federal agencies (such as the federal Port Authorities), you must continue to submit your application by mail directly to that Crown corporation or agency.

First time user

To apply online for payments in lieu of taxes on behalf of a taxing authority, you must be authorized to represent this taxing authority and you must create an account.

If you already have an account, enter your username and password to sign in.
Note

Your sign in session will expire after 30 minutes of inactivity. If JavaScript is enabled, 5 minutes before expiring, you will have the option of extending your session by another 30 minutes.






Print application forms

If you prefer, you may print the application forms, complete them off-line and submit them by email or mail. Please ensure to include all relevant information (such as by-laws and spreadsheets of property data) with your application.
